aFACE at Sunny side of the Doc 2009
Taking from the world around us to make new things is what culture is about. Culture is that which we use to communicate and in our visual age communication is all about Images. So who owns these images? When your camera opens its shutter and greedily gobbles up all the light reflecting off the surfaces of buildings, faces, T-shirts, paintings, sculptures, movies and photos, are you breaking the law? Does your camera's mic infringe the law when it captures the perturbations made by speech, song and soundtrack? Copyright, a system that is meant to promote creativity, seems to have been hijacked by big institutions and corporations. DOC IT the Italian Documentary Association, with the cooperation of a lot of European professionals, has been active in the last couple of years in promoting the debate on Copyrights and Freedom of Speech in the audiovisual domain in Europe. We hope that each European docs Guild will support the battle, and will appoint one of its member to act as delegate for the Copyright issue that will become member of aFACE in order to feed aFACE with knowledge on the specific characteristics of the European State legislations the guild is based, and the need of its associated.
